This is not Down To The Wood's trading policy, but the quoted trading
policy from the supplier who suppliers the items that we have linked to this
page
For centuries Aboriginals have lived in the scrub forest of central South
America, following their traditional ways of life as hunter-gatherers. Now
this way of life is being threatened by the relentless advance or civilization.
The forest is being chopped down and many are thrown off their land, or left
with little space in which to pursue their traditional methods of collecting
food. Some have turned to craft production as a means of survival and a way
to keep their culture alive.

Different woods are first glued together, before carving starts. These villages do not have electricity, therefore these items really are 'hand made' |
All items are handcrafted in scented local woods, beautifully finished and
polished. No trees are felled to obtain wood. The wood is taken from trees
that have died naturally, where the wood has already been seasoned. This very
long natural process results in the beautiful colours and feel of the wood.
All this also represents a wise use of forest resources. By sharing the beauty
of the forest with us, the Indians are able to carry on living in it. They
carry out the craftwork in their homes, in their own time, enabling them to
survive in their native land and preserving their dignity by earning a living.
